overview : Designed as an architectural showplace, Hearthstone was built between 1881 and 1882 for Henry J. Rogers, a prominent Appleton businessman. On September 30, 1882, it became the first residence in the world to be lighted by a centrally located hydroelectric station using the Edison system.
