overview : The Hattiesburg Area Historical Society was organized in 1970, in an effort to fill a void in the preservation of local history and heritage. HAHS was incorporated in 1971, was the first historical society in the area, and was the second society formed in the state of Mississippi. Membership has always been open to everyone. The HAHS currently has members in 30 states and several countries. The HAHS maintains a small museum and office in the Hattiesburg Cultural Center (formerly the public library building) in the historic downtown area.
collections : The HAHS collection consists of donated materials related to the area's history and heritage. The collection includes: city directories, high school annuals and pictures, college yearbooks, uniforms, old photographs, furnishings, household goods, and information on area homes, industries, and buildings.
