overview : Born in Churchville, New York in 1839, Frances Elizabeth Caroline Willard would grow up to become one of Rock County's most famous women. Her mother was teacher, while her father managed a store. -This one-room schoolhouse was built by Josiah Willard (her father), so that Frances and other local children could begin their education. - As an adult, she became the dean of women when the college merged with Northwestern University. She would eventually resign from her prestigious position to join the fledgling National Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU).
