overview : Originally, this U.S. Army post was established in 1851 at another location by General William G. Belknap. It was moved the very same year to the present day location along the Brazos River. Fort Belknap was one of the largest posts in North Texas prior to the Civil War, it protected early settlers, travelers, and was a stop on the famous Butterfield Overland Mail Route. It was abandoned in 1867
