overview : Founded in 1969 by a group of commercial fisherman in Gills Rock, the Door County maritime Museum opened its doors to the public at Gills Rock in 1975. - Two years later a small museum opened in Sturgeon Bay and in 1997 a state of the art 20,000 square foot facility was built to replace it. - The Cana Island Lighthouse has been operated by the Museum since 1971. Each location focuses on a different aspect of Door County's rich maritime heritage. The organization expanded it name in the summer of 2002 to The Door County Maritime Museum & Lighthouse Preservation Society, Inc. to clarify and solidify its role in preserving the lighthouses of Door County.
