Founded in 1967, the Museum was established to be a lasting memorial to the heritage of the rural country doctor. The Museum's collection includes artifacts relevant to many aspects of health care including nursing, pharmacy, homeopathy, and dentistry. Along with surgical sets and microscopes, the collection now incorporates medicine kits, apothecary equipment, nursing uniforms and memorabilia, works of art, and antique carriages. A medical herb garden located behind the Museum delights visitors throughout the year. Visitors to the Museum will tour the museum buildings located in this peaceful rural setting. The Farmer Annex houses the administrative offices of the museum, and it is here that visitors are greeted. The original museum building which houses the majority of the museum's collection will be the first stop on your tour. The Art of Nursing is the current home of the museum's tribute to nursing in eastern North Carolina. Your last tour stop is the delightful and surprising carriage house, the newest building in the museum complex.
