overview : Built in 1735, the oldest house in Berkshire County, the Colonel John Ashley House was the site of the first drafting of the Sheffield Declaration, a petition against British tyrrany, and the home to slave Mumbet, the first slave to successfully sue for freedom under the Massachusetts Constitution.
