overview : Located in the heart of Florida's Space Coast, Brevard Zoo opened in 1994 after 20,000 local volunteers participated in the world's largest community build. Volunteer builds have helped the zoo grow dramatically in the past 9 years. The zoo now includes shaded boardwalks through three themed loops, a wheelchair accessible train, a playground and petting zoo, a free flight aviary where you can feed the birds and daily behind the scenes tours. Brevard Zoo is also the only zoo in the United States where you can take a guided kayak tour. Opening in 2003 is the long awaited 10 acre expansion, "Expedition Africa," where visitors will be able to hand feed giraffe and kayak through white rhino habitat. The zoo's education department has won several awards - most importantly for their innovative (and first in the nation) elementary Zoo School Program. Three themed classrooms (a cave, tree house and swamp room) will open in 2003. The zoo is also internationally recognized as a leader in the field of zoo supported conservation initiatives.
collections : The zoo features over 480 animals, representing 130 species. 60 new species will be added with the opening of the Expedition Africa area in 2003.
hours (subject to change) : 10 AM - 5 PM. Last admission is at 4:15 PM daily. The zoo is only closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas but special hours may apply during special events.
