overview : In 1846, a Swedish religious leader named Eric Janson brought his followers to a new land where they could practice religious freedom in a communal settlement they named Bishop Hill. After a difficult start, including a first winter spent in dugout caves in what is now the town baseball field, they eventually created a "Utopia on the Prairie" in a thriving community.
