overview : In August 1861 an advertisement of a somewhat unusual nature appeared in a Birmingham newspaper. It invited inquiries from persons interested in the establishment of a nonconformist settlement in New Zealand. - Thus begins the story of the last organised colonisation in New Zealand – a scheme that was not as successful as other settlements in the south, but which nevertheless produced many inspiring examples of the courage of the early pioneers.
