overview : The African-American Museum tells the story of the arrival of the Africans and the development of the Free People of Color community in Louisiana. The Museum also interprets their struggles, adaptations and contributions, with particular emphasis on the Attakapas District of Southwest Louisiana during the 18th and 19th centuries. It outlines the rise and fall of slavery, highlighting the Free People of Color and the economic struggles they faced during Reconstruction after the Civil War.

collections : The Museum features text panels, artifacts, electronic exhibits and a mural. The 26' mural by Dennis Paul Williams highlights the trades and accomplishments of St. Martinville's Free People of Color. The museum holds lectures and sponsors medical aid, education and tourism mission to Senegal's Goree Island, a sister-city of St. Martinville. Student activities and other programs are currently available.
