overview : The scope of the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum covers the contributions of Mississippi and Mississippians to the defense of the United States and its interests. The museum is located at Camp Shelby, an active military post established in 1917, located approximately 12 miles south of Hattiesburg, Mississippi (100 miles northeast of New Orleans). The Mississippi Armed Forces Museum opened on 27 October 2001 and features over 16,000 square feet of exhibition space with interactive exhibits arranged chronologically from Mississippi's role during the War of 1812 to the Global War Against Terrorism (2001 - present). The musuem holds over 17,000 artifacts in addtion to a reading library and substantial archive relating to military history. As the museum is located on an active military installation, proper photo identification and proper vehicle registration is required. Also, all vehichles and personal articles are subject to search. Privately owned weapons, including firearms, are not permitted.
