overview : A comprehensive history of Clearfield and Clearfield County from its founding as an Indian settlement by the Shawnee Tribe, through its past and present as an important source for many of the raw materials used to supply Pennsylvania's steel and coal industries. Clearfield gets its name from the first English explorers to arrive by canoe on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River who marveled at its geography: a clear field in a valley between the mountains where the bison graze as far as you can see. - Most of the county's appeal is the great outdoors: fishing, canoeing, hunting, hiking, camping, mountain biking and other outdoor activities abound throughout the county.
